Child Case Study 8B
Anxiety, Gifted, Dietary Limitation, Hyperactive, Sensory Issues, Sleep Issues, Speech Delay.
“For the past 3 months, sleep has been wonderful! It has really saved the family.
To be honest, we owe you (koo energy) a lot.
We have been through a lot over the last few years. Family was on the verge of collapse. It’s been so stressful, so difficult. The key thing was Sleep for the whole family. Because he was not sleeping, we were not sleeping.
Now, 90% of the days, he is sleeping 8 to 9 hours. That wasn’t the case earlier.
In the past, he used to move a lot in his sleep. I don’t think so now.
I would say almost Zero. Once he sleeps, he is very still.
The overall trend line in terms of pre-nov when we started Sleep Therapy till now, is a wonderful thing.
I would say more than anything else, that is most awesome thing that has happened.
Koo Energy fixed our child when two brain surgeries could not."

Interview with Parents
After 3 months of Sleep Therapy
"Sleep has been wonderful. It has saved the family."
SLEEP QUALITY
BEFORE
Prior to koo energy Sleep Therapy, Father wrote in Observation Notes:
Sleep as of now is erratic with about one to two nights average in a week affected. On such bad nights he can wake up at 2am and stay awake the rest of the night. This is however an improvement over 2016 -18 when pain kept him from sleeping well on most nights. In between his sleep, he moves a lot. Face and posture used to look very sick and would resist any attempt to make him speak."
AFTER
Father: “Sleep has been wonderful! It has really saved the family. To be honest, we owe you (koo energy) a lot.

"Made some progress in eating: He is more likely to eat now."
DIETARY HABITS
BEFORE
Mother: "He eats the same food everyday. He has a routine from morning to evening. If we introduce a new thing, he will not eat at all."
At home, he does not like fruits. He does not like vegetables. So steam and mash it up. Add very little rice and add one egg. He does not know how to use the spoon. "In school, there has been quite a dramatic change."
TEMPERAMENT
BEFORE
One very important thing that has happened - I clearly recall almost every day last year, I was there to pick him up from school. Almost Three days in five, they would say he had some pain. They had to give him Calpol (Paracetamol).
AFTER
Father: "In school there has been quite a dramatic change. He has made 1 Good Friend and spends a lot of time with Alex. Very active, very cheerful and positive. Teachers happy to see him in the morning, they know he is not going to be trouble.
Since nov (after Sleep Therapy begins on 13.11.20), practically no pain.

"He is spending time just with the books."
ATTENTIVENESS
AFTER
Father: "Being more thoughtful and not reaching out for phone all the time.
He is either spending time just with the books.
Or he has the books and a phone on top of the books.
A day almost two and a half hours spent with the animal books, almost forcing me - my legs getting cramps.
He started typing letters in the keyboard.
That has been awesome! For almost 15 days or so - he spends a lot of time on the keyword on the phone. He really enjoys it.
He is able to do two word phrase. Arctic fox, watching out for the space.
Attention span is longer. It was dramatic. January was a totally an awesome month, particularly late Jan.
He spent a lot of time on animals, books. We built a lot on that. He was totally incredible. He knows exactly where a particular animal is in which part of the book.
Same animal will have different pictures done by different artists. He is able to correlate the pictures with the pictures in the previous book. He is able to link.
More the motivation and the drive rather than intelligence and cognitive ability. Wanting to sit."

"So much difference in behaviour."
BEHAVIOUR
BEFORE
Prior to koo energy Sleep Therapy, Father wrote on Observation Notes:
Aggressive behaviour and hyperactivity was controlled by ADHD medication (methylphenidate) but since recently no adverse behaviour observed.
Father: "So Much Difference.
Last one week was in a way interesting although it was very difficult. We realised how difficult before Nov. (Boy started Sleep Therapy on 13 Nov.)
Typically very cranky. Very difficult to make him do anything. Hysterical laughter. No interest in learning. He would throw lots of things out of the window - even the phone, a lot of toys, animal stickers. He would go to brother’s room and press the X-phone button. That would make him laugh. He would enjoy the fact that we were trying to make him stop. Then when we took him out of the room, he would resist. That made him even in the fun mode - he thinks that it is fun. He would just cry/weep for no reason. He would tear papers in the books.
Troublesome behaviours we had before Nov. Things used to be much worse, when he was in the pain mode earlier like he used to throw the furniture.
AFTER
Father: Between Nov and Dec and much of Jan, it all disappeared. There was almost no hysterical laughter, throwing things out of the window, being naughty, being cranky. All of these things disappeared.
We so much focus on his good stuff - make him learn, do better in ABA and all that. These are all the good stuff that have happened in terms of behaviour in the last couple of months."

"He got all of us together, where he was hugging us altogether."
RESPONSIVENESS
Father: "That was very cute incident, out of the blue he did it. He was playing in the living room, and I went into the kitchen and brought myself some food for me to eat. As I was eating, I did not have a spoon. I was eating with my hands. He thought it was the wrong thing perhaps. He immediately walked to the kitchen himself, opened the drawer, took out a spoon, gave it to me, and waited till I started eating the food with the spoon. He even took a spoonful and fed me.
My guess that was the moment when he had a sudden burst of detox and the brain was working very well.
Listening to his brother prompting him to say ‘balloon’ in your language - obvious of him trying to be engaged.
Yes, video forwarded 10 days ago. He got all of us together. Very nice bonding session, where he was hugging us altogether.
Couple of weeks ago, he forced me to spend almost two and a half hour with him, to do the typing with him.
He spends a lot of time in the animal books. Reduced a little in the last one week. We are really trying to do animal activity with him. Getting him different boxes.
That was what prompted me to do the birds thing. That was an awesome thing to do. We could really see his cognitive abilities. Talent is there, the ability is there."

Mother: "Expressing his likes or dislikes, or request. There is a difference. He is not annoyed anymore. He will say what we want him to say. He will try. He will show us the shelf where the item is and say it.
For going to park, he will show outside. There is an expression. In the past, he would say out of the blue. His connection of the sound to the things he wants or things he wants to do. He understands. He will point and try to say.

Father: "Normally, he would be very cursory* when we toldhim, pray to god. In the past, he would just do this hand gesture and then go away.
In the video, he spent more than 30 seconds, literally almost seemed like he was talking, trying to say something. More attentive, almost like muttering a prayer."

"Totally changed now, in terms of wanting to communicate."
VERBAL
Father: "Total Changed now. In terms of wanting to Communicate is totally there.
Earlier even when he was doing biomedical in Sep, he would resist.
Let’s say, he would say ‘pa’, we wanted him to say ‘ma’.
He frequently wants the Scissors. Fun thing he does: blows up the balloon, make us cut it, release it and it goes ‘ooz’. We try to make him say ’s’ before we give him the scissor. The resistance in terms of wanting to try is completely gone.
He actually wants to to communicate. Even on his own, he started doing it a couple of times.
He wants to go to the park. Difficulty in terms of cognition, he is getting a little bit better now. Earlier on, he thought everything is “pa”, or everything is “ma”. He is able to discriminate. He knows that Park is “p” and mother is “m”.
Earlier, he would even lash out when we were trying to make him speak. Resistance is almost gone now.He is actually trying. When we try with him, he is not resisting."

Now he tries to say more - almost up to 10 or 12 sounds that he makes. He does not get annoyed when we asked him to make the first letter of the word. He is not annoyed. He is willing to try it out. He is making more sounds although the complete words are not out yet. He would make the first sound, without annoyance."
BEFORE
Father wrote on Observation Notes:
“No sound. Only ‘b’, ‘p’ ‘h’. Completely non-verbal despite speech therapy for over 3 years until recently. Expresses up to 2 syllabus words but cognition to connect the word to its meaning is still weak. Communicate by gesturing mostly and nagging until we understand what he wants”

"He was listening more, sitting, responding, picking up."
LEARNING
Mother: "They were good. For the first month, he was listening more, he was sitting, he was responding, picking up. The same like I do for the class. Sit for an hour without getting irritated. So that was good. In the past, his attention span was 20-30 minutes. Three years back with Speech or OT, he would sit after 3-4 months of training. Now with ABA, then it came within 2-3 weeks. Progressively we increased the time window. His maximum is sitting for 1 hour. He focuses, answers, show things on the screen. He is quite good for the last two months."

Mother: "Cognitive skills in numeracy & non-verbal language is still good. He is listening to instructions. That is good. He is behaving well."
"He got first time the concept of addition."
NUMERACY
Mother: "Studies, like the word and the numbers. When he is in the good mood, he will sit with me for at least half an hour. What we do together is addition. He got first time the concept of addition in Math. Playing games in which objects are there. Put numbers against it. 15 to 20 mins on a good day.
Last 4-5 days have been good because of the medication which we discontinued yesterday. We went through the downhill for 3-4 days.
Previously, before that, he would do the math thing with me. Hundred set of animals pictures. Take each animal out. See the spelling. Take the letters together and make the word. He would put it back in order. He was doing perfectly fine. That takes half an hour to 45 minutes and he would complete them all. Really sits before he finishes. That is for me, the maximum focus he gives me in the cards game."

FOCUS & ATTENTIVENESS
Mother: "Animals Bingo. Because dad started this birds bingo and it worked well, I got a similar animal big sheet. We take each animal and he has to match it. He enjoys it now.
These are the few activities where I see, he starts to do as a normal person. It was really great. Almost 10 days back - maximum good days. I have never seen as much focus and attentiveness.
I started teasing my elder son who is perfectly good and very good in his grammar school. “See your little one? He is like more focused than you.” I have gone to that stage of cracking jokes.
Once he does that half an hour, or one hour task, he is really quiet after that, just playing by himself. We don’t even have to see which room he is in, or what he is doing."

"koo energy Sleep Therapy has been dramatic for us."
Father: "Sleep Therapy has been dramatic for us. December and January were the most awesome couple of months we had, since 2014-15 when all the troubles started for us. Absolutely no doubt about it."
"We want to do everything possible to facilitate that detox. "
SELF-EVALUATION
Father: What we are thinking is: Things could have been ten times better. We did not do it all correctly. Even though we started the Sleep Therapy on 13 Nov. To be honest, the way you recommended we use the mat, we have been doing it slightly more than one month now. I put down the timeline for you. 9 hours of Live heating - we have been doing it only since 18 Jan.
We have not done it as best as your recommendation:
While the last few months have been fantastic for us with Sleep Therapy, it could have been ten times better, perhaps.
We think two things came in the way, perhaps:
1. The fact that we started live heating for 9 hours only since 1 month ago
2. All these various things (supplement & medication) we are putting into him
We are confident that things have been very good, the detox responses that we have seen in him is not as much as you have seen in other kids - of course I am fully aware that you have told us that you do not see them in every kid.
We have been wrestling with his issues since 2014. Whether toxicity is the issue. We have absolutely no doubt. We first got to know about it in Sep. Before Sep, we were talking lots of other things. Since Sept, we have been absolutely about toxicity. We have come around to that.
Given that, we want the detox to be a lot more. We want to do everything possible to facilitate that.
Good thing is that we have seen the dramatic thing the Sleep Therapy can do. We want everything possible. Partly also because he is eight years old now. You can see how restless we are.
We want to take this detox very seriously now. We want to see if it is possible to really ramp it up:
1. we are going to persist with the 9 hours. Absolutely sure that the mat is working. That is the reason, we asked your colleague to send a fresh set of mat. We are using the new mat now. Totally sure that the mat is working.
2. Ideally, what we want to try is to take out all the supplement. See if it can be done.
3. Start using the mat more, for example in the daytime.
These are the questions and thinking that is on my mind. Really want you to help because this is a very important time for us."

"Curious to see rash, mucus, nosebleed - those extremes I don't see."
Detox Reactions listed:
No Skin Detox. Urine - Good Volume, Faeces
Gas, Running Nose, Weight Gain
Mother: “I keep asking the same question: Are we sure that he is still detoxing?”I am curious to see rash, mucus, nose bleed -those extremes I don’t see. I keep checking every time.
Suggestion: Take away the three things you were considering taking out, and you may be able to see more detox. As we are doing this energy boost, if something external to intervene, it will slow it down, especially amitriptyline and even Ayurvedic pain relief.
Pain management got to do with central nervous system. Once it is being controlled, detoxification cannot go full force.
There are a lot of side effects when it comes to chemical introduction. Pain management got to do with central nervous system. Once it is being controlled, detoxification cannot go full force."

Verbal Expression
"Good point is he is interested to put A-Z alphabet in a row."
Making Sounds of Alphabet
When he is taking A, I say Ah then he will say A
When he is picking B, I say Bir he will say Bir
C, d… He knows many of them. And he makes the sound of many of them. But some he can’t say J. When I say J, he will say Ya.
Good point is he is interested to put A-Z alphabet in a row. He is so interested that he will do anything I am asking him to do. This gives me the opportunity to make him do the sounds. Otherwise, he does not want to make the sounds very easily.
Similarly for the crayons - he is interested. If he wants red crayon, I say “Red”. If he is in a good mood, he will say “Red”.

"He says 'ya' very strongly. That is the first time I have seen his action coming out of him."
New Words Heard by Mother - First time saying “Ya”.
He says ‘ne’. When we ask him something, he now shakes his head like this (nodding). We pushed him and he says “Ya”.
“Do you want to go out?”, he does this (nodding) say “ya” and then he remembers he has to say “ya”. He says “ya” very strongly. That is the first time I have seen his action coming out of him.

"He is showing some extra steps of action, to show that he needs something.
That is really a good step that he makes an effort. "
That is really a good step that he makes an effort. "
Expressing his desires and needs. Communicating with Brother.
The other day. He likes his older brother to come out and play the trampoline with him. Jump. He was studying in his room. He went to knock and open the door. He said “Ba” means come out to play. His brother did not come out. Then he came to me and he was pulling me. I asked him what happened. He showed his door and he said, “ba”. So I asked his older brother did he come? And he said yes he did.
He is showing some extra steps of action, to show that he needs something. That is really a good step that he makes an effort. He did not say trampoline, but he says ‘ba’. We understand “ba” is “going out” for him. So he knocks his door. He tried to tell him come out and play.
"He started showing his interest quite strongly. He makes sure that we get that point."
Expressing His Hunger and Showing His Interest Very Strongly
He also did that to me this morning. He woke up at 3.30am I was very tired. I went to the other room and I slept. Papa kept working in this room. He was playing his video.
At 5.30am, he was already hungry. So he came to me, and pulled my blanket off. He started showing me, pointing, saying “Por por por”, that means porridge.
I said, “So early, you want to eat now?” And he said, “Ya”. So I went to make his porridge and then he ate his porridge.
He started showing his interest quite strongly. He makes sure that we get that point.
C: He is driven by his need to express. That is what we want. He needs to apply his skills for this Accelerated Learning Programme. So that he can be more expressive and the people around can understand him.

" He did try a new word today. He tried 'Faster'".
New Words Heard by Father - Push, Fa (Phone), "Faster"
He is doing “push”, not the last bit but it is very clear what he is talking about. He does not mix it up.
When he wants me to move him in the park, he will definitely say “pu” (push). When he wants the phone, it is always ‘fa’.
The main thing is he is able to differentiate.
He did try a new word today. He tried “Faster”, I remember now. He was able to say ‘faster’ once, when I was making him to go around (the station in the park).

"On his own, when he wants the phone, he will just say ‘ fa’. That much progress has happened. "
Progress in Speech - compared to before Sleep Therapy
To illustrate the progress:
Before he started Sleep Therapy some time in Aug-Nov, when he was doing Biomedical, he started saying some phrases.
1. Typical attitude was: hey these guy want me to say something, like ‘ma’ or ‘pa’. He was not able to differentiate. Whatever it is, he would just say “Ma”. If we tell him “no, no, say something else”, he would say “papapa” for everything. He was not able to differentiate.
2. He used to get very annoyed after a while. He used to sense that we were trying to make him to talk. His attitude: hopefully these guys would leave me along. If we persisted, he would scream.
After koo energy Sleep Therapy now,
First thing on his own, he says things like “push”
Secondly, he is not uncomfortable nor annoyed when we make him do it. He is more comfortable - that is very importantly.
Thirdly, he can definitely differentiate - one thing applies here and the other somewhere else. He is not mixing it up. He does not say ‘fa’ if he wants us to ‘push’.
Range is not increasing considerably, but in terms of wanting to communicate, it is there.
On his own, when he wants the phone, he will just say ‘ fa’.
That much progress has happened. Obviously not a lot, but at least there is some progress.

Learning
"When I say we have to sit and study, he just goes to the table-chair, and starts sitting there."
Sit & Study Discipline & Favourite Colouring.
When I say we have to sit and study, he just goes to the table-chair, and starts sitting there.
Timetable is all set. There are some tough days when he doesn’t want to. The only favourite thing he likes is ‘painting’ a lot. Everyday, he will do one sheet of ‘painting’.
Colouring. He does not do much with the brush - he just scribbles. Only with the pencil or crayon, he really holds it and does for a long time. With the paint, he just brushes once and he leaves it.

"He has gone so hooked with 'the hungry caterpillar' now."
Obsessed with ALP Story
Good thing is: In the YouTube videos, he searched for hungry caterpillar and he started listening to every hungry caterpillar which is in the YouTube - everyone. In some video, there is a hungry caterpillar which pops out of the egg. I have seen the video this morning when he was eating and watching that. There was a small caterpillar that came of the egg and it was walking and looking for the apple. He is watching it repeatedly. He has gone so hooked with the hungry caterpillar now. He just thinks of hungry caterpillar. That’s all!
Consultant: Seize the opportunity to do the art & craft of Caterpillar.

"He enjoys watching himself."
Looking At Mirror & Photos More. Making Funny Faces
He looks at the mirror lately and makes faces.
Sometimes, he does that also when I am making a mirror. Because he can see his face, he will make his eyes like this, tongue out and say ‘ah’. The other day, I had to say ‘stop it, we are doing video’. I cut it all off and get started again.
I stick lot of his photos on the wall - memories of the past. Sometime back, he used to look on the photo for a long time. I tell him this is you and this is your brother. Yes, he observes and notices. But recently, what I see as the fun part, is he looks at his tongue and his eyes, poses his eyes like this, mouth like this and making funny facial expressions.
C: This is telling of his identity - his liking of his own features, which comes with his enlightened state of awareness. Good for self-grooming. He is looking at the mirror more.
Not combing his hair. He is looking more at the mirror. Making his eyes. Tongue mainly. Put his lips up and look at the teeth. He enjoys watching himself.

C: Give him a comb.
I need to cut his hair too.

"In the past, he was scared of cutting hair. Now he is a little better."
A Little Better at Hair Cutting
In the past, he was scared of cutting hair. Because I do it at home now, from the time Covid started.
Now he is a little better. Because I do not put him under pressure. I do it very lightly. But he does not like hair cutting. That is a big task for us.
Next time, film it. He knows he is on candid camera. He will behave himself.

Better Sense of Awareness
"He has learnt a lot in the last 2-3 weeks with the road things. That is very good."
Learning Road Safety Rules
Over at the old house, it is a secured residential colony. Buses and heavy vehicles would not come into colony. We were very secluded there. So he never learnt the road rules. Over there, they used to go into the car all the time. Because they only used to go to the park. Dad used to drive a lot.
We are right on the main road. The minute you step out of the main gate, we are on the real fast road. Here, they go by walking - at least 2-3 times a day, walking 1-2 km a day.
Over here, as soon as you open the main gate, you are on the main road. He started to see the vehicles going very fast. So he is walking on the foot path. He understands the rules of the road better now. So he doesn’t go onto the road at all. He is on the footpath with his dad. I am sure he is absorbing and seeing things - of roads, the vehicles going fast. He makes him stop at the signal, press the button, wait till the vehicles, then they cross. So he has learnt a lot in the last 2-3 weeks with the road things. That is very good.

"Things are changing a little bit. He always asks before crossing the road. He doesn’t run like before."
Road Safety. A lot better even in learning.
It is getting better. I see some slight changes now. He knows the difference between red and green. Green means you can go. The moment he reaches the red light, he presses the button and wait before it turns green.

Seeing Curiosity in Him
I can see some curiosity in him. I often see him playing videos on the months of the year. He is very curious obviously. I think I need to use this for learning. Maybe teach him the months.

Improvement in Dietary Habit
"He eats banana now. That is the good news. "
Solid Food Banana Reduced Mashed Food (Used to eat only blended food)
He eats banana now. That is the good news. He started with one piece of banana. Now he eats the whole banana.
He has additional food, made of white lentils and rice, soaked overnight and ground it to make pasty dahl. We make pancake with it in the morning, made of lentil and rice.
We have reduced it very much. He doesn’t like it too much now.

He likes raw onions. When I am cutting raw onions to cook, he will come to the kitchen and he takes it from my cutting plate. I put the sliced onions aside for him. He took one by one. He ate almost 5-6 pieces.

Improvement in Toilet Habits
"So he is improving. He dresses up himself after visiting the toilet."
Independence in Toilet Training & Dressing Up Himself
He has improved. He goes to toilet also, every one or two hours. We make him sit.
He has gained independence for toilet training.
Little bit. Sometimes, he doesn’t. Then we have to tell him. Because I am home, I make him go after every two hours. Whenever I am out of work, I go and tell him to sit. He is telling us. Sometimes, there were incidents when he went to pull his dad’s hands because he had to go to the toilet. I was busy in the kitchen, so he tried to come to me but he noticed. And he went to pull his dad’s hands. Then he took him to the toilet. Then we got it.
So he is improving. He dresses up himself after visiting the toilet.
While going out, he dresses up himself. Because dad said “I am not helping you. You do it yourself.” He is sitting and slowly doing it himself. He is improving.

"He does it better. He understands little little steps. "
Better At Toothbrushing
He does it better. In the morning, before he goes for his walk at nine, he brushes his teeth and washes his face. He takes the brush from the place and apply the toothpaste. He understands little little steps. But I have to keep telling him. I keep improving. So maybe next 2-3 weeks, he can do it completely. I can stand aside.
He uses water to wash his face. And then he wipes it with a towel. He does both of them, and goes to toilet. And then he dresses himself up. I am trying to keep it as a standard procedure for him.

"Resolving toxicity is going quite well. Somehow, sleep is going very well. "
Sleep is Going Very Well with Good Detox and Good Behaviour
Resolving toxicity is going quite well, except for a bad day.
Somehow, sleep is going very well. For example, last night he did not have good sleep. But in the morning, he had good detox. But morning behaviour is fairly good. It clearly depends. It is not like on certain days, sleep is not there, it is bad but generally is going fine.

"What that tells you is that he is able to not worry about the pain. He is really enjoying life now. "
Play Behaviour & Spring in the steps. Not worry about pain. Really enjoying life now.
One thing very clearly that is coming through is his play behaviour. Because he went through a very rough five to six years. We had not really seen him playing like a child.
Now his favourite thing is slide down the handrails of the stairs. Kids love to slide down. He has never done that before. Now whenever he sees one, he slides down.
There is a kind of a spring in the steps. When you see a normal child walking on the road. They are not really walking. It is almost like a deer jumping - little jumps. He is doing that now. That kind of tells you that there is real joy. It is not just happiness. Happiness is more like an adult concept. Joy is more like a child concept.
You see the spring in the steps. That’s coming. That wasn’t there before. That I have noticed only since about 4-5 days, on the road. It is like a jump. Inside, he is so happy and joyful.
The play behaviour is coming. Typical things.
What that tells you is that he is able to not worry about the pain, not worry about anything else at all. He is really enjoying life now. That is the main thing.

"A bit of stress there, but we are coming out of it. We are totally happy, Ms Lai."
Before and After Sleep Therapy Comparison
You know what we have been through before coming to Sleep Therapy. We spent so much. I have been going through my mind. It must have totally cost us 200 thousand pounds, before we came to Sleep Therapy.
We did so much in medicine. Surgery and all that. It was like a huge burden. A bit of stress there, but we are coming out of it.
We are totally happy, Ms Lai.
